8 Quick Steps to Protect Your Home from the Cold

  1. In freezing cold conditions, allow faucets to drip slowly to keep pipes from freezing.

  2. Open kitchen/bathroom sink cabinets to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing fixtures and pipes.

  3. Know where and how to shut off the main water supply in case of a ruptured pipe.

  4. Never use your stove, oven, grill to heat your home.

  5. Place space heaters on level hard surfaces at least 3 feet from anything flammable. Never leave unattended.

  6. Instal carbon monoxide detectors in your home and quickly find fresh air if alarm sounds.

  7. Heat your home. If you leave for the day (or an extended period of time) do not turn the heat completely off. Turn it on & set to the lowest setting you wish. (60+ degrees is recommended)

  8. Protect outdoor spigots. Disconnect any hose you may have attached to any outdoor spigots & cover up the spigots.
